The safety of Londoners is Mayor Sadiq Khan’s top priority. In the face of Government cuts to the Metropolitan Police’s budgets, he is fighting hard to secure more resources for London’s police.

He has prioritised neighbourhood policing and is on track to put an extra police officer in every London ward by the end of 2017 - ensuring all communities have a dedicated police presence to tackle crime and anti-social behaviour.

The Mayor’s work on policing and crime includes:

  • the £74 million London Crime Prevention Fund to help prevent crime
  • fighting for more resources for the Met in response to Government funding cuts that have cut police budgets by £600 million since 2010
  • launching the Police and Crime Plan for London which sets out the top priorities for policing and safety in London over the next four years, including:
    • tackling knife crime
    • keeping children and young people safe
    • tackling violence against women and girls
    • fighting extremism and hate crime
    • improving the service victims of crime receive.
  • appointing London’s first Victims' Commissioner, Claire Waxman, to stand up for victims of crime
  • setting out his Knife Crime Strategy and launching a major campaign targeted at young people: London Needs You Alive
  • equipping the police with new technology such as Body-Worn Video and mobile tablets to help make the police more effective and accountable.
